How to Prep Your Eyes for Makeup

A lot of you have come to me with the same very annoying and yet easily fixable problem: “Why does my eye makeup always look so patchy?” Well, 9 times out of 10, it’s because you don’t prepare your eyes for makeup correctly. Today, I’m going to show you how to do it.

For any eye makeup look that you’re going for, whether dramatic or soft, you need to first create a neutral base on your lids. Most eye shadows are powder based so if applied directly to the skin, they will “grab” in oily areas, creating a blotchy appearance. This will make it also impossible to blend smoothly. That’s why you need to apply a base on your lids that will not only keep moisture away and take away any discoloration, but it will also create a smooth and clean slate for other shadows, prolonging your makeup at the same time. For some of you who prefer a clean eye look, this may even be the only eye shadow you will ever need.

3 easy steps to follow:

  1. Clean the excess oil with a cotton pad and a cleanser. I use my favorite Bioderma Micellar Water. It’s very gentle and soothing and does not irritate even the most sensitive eyes.
  2. Apply an eyeshadow base. I use Eyeshadow Primer Portion in color Eden from Urban Decay Cosmetics. I like that it has a nude matte shade that gives full coverage and removes any veins or discoloration. It does not crease, stays on for hours and helps eye shows look more vibrant. I apply it with my Real Techniques Doomed Shadow brush. Apply the primer from the brow bone down to the lash line and don’t forget to cover the inner corner of the eye.
  3. Follow with a neutral tone eyeshadow and a fluffy blush. To set the primer, apply a thin layer of a light shadow and make sure the whole eyelid is covered and the shadow is dense enough. I use Morphe M505 brush to set the lids. On most occasions, I use color “flower child” and “charmer” as my base shadows from Tarte Cosmetics Tartelette in Bloom Palette but any matte light eyeshadow would work.

If you follow these 3 simple steps, you will be surprised at how much of a difference it will make to your eye makeup. I also did a quick video tutorial for you to show you how I do it.

Thanks so much for reading and watching.
